Planning a Destination Wedding - The Right Spot

OK, so last post I told you about our decision to have a Destination Wedding.  The next step is where, and believe me...there are a ton of great spots.  I’ve been all over the Caribbean, so my head was swimming with great beaches so the choice proved to be more difficult than I thought.

About a year before we got engaged, my girlfriend and I took a vacation to St. Lucia and stayed at the Windjammer Landing resort.  While we were there we saw a wedding taking place out on the point that they have overlooking the ocean.  Neither one of us wanted to say anything at the time, but we were both thinking the same thing - if we did get married we’d like it to be there.  So we started planning for a wedding in St. Lucia.  We went so far as to have our Destination Wedding Specialist reserve the wedding date and location, and we started pricing out travel packages.  We knew that choosing St. Lucia wasn’t the cheapest option for everyone, but it was our perfect spot so we went with it.  Below is a shot of the resort.  It’s really unique because it’s set on the side of a huge hill, so everything has a great view:

Once we got the estimates we went to our "A list" guests (the people that we wouldn’t get married without) and gave them the prices.  Let’s just say they weren’t too enthusiastic.  In fact we ran into some big objections from our parents who encouraged us to look at different locations.

We did a survey of our guests and here’s what it came down to:

About 15-20 guests would go if it was in St. Lucia

About 40-50 guests would go if it were in a cheaper location

After much thought and discussion between my fiance and I we decided that we would move to a cheaper destination.  Instead of viewing this as abandoning our perfect dream location, we chose to view it as a chance to have more of our closest friends and family join the party, and it saved us money so we could take a really over-the-top honeymoon (which I will get into in a later post...it was incredible).  So next post I will tell you about the destination/resort we chose as we moved along in our planning.
