When two love birds unite, there’s bound to be a fairytale wedding in the making. Romance at every turn. Love in the air. Nothing could be more perfect than a Love Bird themed wedding.
Your Dress
If you’re going to create a Love Bird themed wedding, why not start with your dress? You can choose a dress that has delicate doves or small birds appliquéd into it already, or you can wear a vintage pin with birds on it. Alternately, you could tie a sash around your waist that has embroidery featuring love birds. You can also look for shoe clips that have birds in rhinestones. The details will get the theme off to a gorgeous start.
Live Birds
You’ll want to think about using live birds as part of your ceremony. There are businesses that offer doves for weddings that are trained to return to their owners. Contact them and see about having doves released at your ceremony. If you’re having an outdoor ceremony, you can have them released at any time during the vows, but if you’re inside, you’ll of course want to save the spectacular moment for when everyone is gathered outside the church. Another way to use live birds is to have them at the reception. Check with the venue first of course. If they will allow, you can bring in parakeets or love birds or a parrot. Don’t have any birds of your own? Contact a local pet store or nature center and see if you can have them at the ceremony on loan. Then, entrust a family member to take charge of returning them the next day.
You can use bird cages in many ways throughout your day. Find vintage cages at flea markets or thrift stores. You can get them very cheap. Don’t worry if they look rusted because you’re going to paint them white. When you get home, clean out the cages and spray paint them white. Even if you find several mismatched cages the effect will be charming when they are all white. Remove any plastic bottoms and spray those as well. You can hang the cages at varying heights around the reception hall. You can use them as bird cage favors too. Fill them with craft store raffia or clear crumpled cellophane with a metallic tint for a magical effect. Inside, you can place artificial birds. You can find them at craft stores in wonderfully lifelike poses, or try a garden center for terra cotta birds that you can also spray white. You may also want to use a bird cage at your gift table to collect any cards you receive.
The Cake
Your cake is the focal point of your reception. Find a baker who can do a fabulous love bird theme on your cake. Suggest sugar love birds for the topper and a birdhouse on top. Use colors from nature or if you have a color scheme already in mind, ask the baker to do sugar ribbons cascading down the cake from the birds’ beaks.
The love birds will soon be nesting in their new home, so add nest details in fun ways throughout the day. You can have a few real birds’ nests if you live in an area where you can find them (make sure birds have abandoned them first). Set up a nature display with twigs and the nest and a pair of artificial birds. Or, for a cute effect you can put a bride and groom in ceramic inside the nest. For favors, you can offer artificial bird’s nest soaps that come with darling soap eggs inside.
Have woven bird’s nests from the craft store stand in as your wedding centerpieces. You can fill them with whatever you like from vintage cutouts of birds to colored tissue to fake eggs. If you have a great caterer he can make you a bird’s nest basket out of fried potatoes and you can serve the first course in it. You can also find bird’s nest cookies or offer cupcakes decorated with bird’s nests made out of coconut on top. Another option is a bird house wedding favors for the love birds.
Soaps and Candles
Lifelike bird candles and soaps have really come a long way. Gone are the flat and boring soaps of yesterday. Companies today pride themselves on making 3-dimensional birds that are so realistic you expect them to sing. Find sources online or ask at a boutique in town.
