Tips for Choosing Your Wedding Colors

Photo by Kristyn Rowland PhotographyYour wedding colors can be as wild or as sedate as you want them to be. The days when white, silver, and gold were the only colors you had to pick from are long gone. Brides today are opting for black, red, green, blue, violet and all the shades of nature. You are not limited by anything but your imagination.

One way to choose you colors is to go with the season. Fall is one of the most popular wedding seasons because of the lovely colors and weather. You can pick colors from nature and bring them into your theme. Try oranges, burnt browns and golden yellows. Pumpkin orange is a great color because you can actually incorporate pumpkins into that theme and then match them back to napkins or favors. All the fall colors including shades of pale green are appropriate and popular for Fall weddings. You should have no trouble finding favors and linens to match.

Yellows will mimic the hues of the bright sunshine. It’s a very happy color that works well even in very muted shades that are so light they are almost cream colored. Try mixing a cream with a blue for a nice beach and sand appeal.

Spring weddings are an artist’s palate of inspiration. You can take any color you see in the flowers and trees and know that it will work as a wedding theme color. The flowers in nature don’t have to match perfectly and neither do you. Choose several shades as your colors. How about bright pink and purple? Use white as your third color. Or do yellows and greens that remind guests of daffodils. Then incorporate live daffodils into your centerpieces.

Choose either silvers, whites and blues or go the other end of the spectrum with ruby and maroon reds, evergreen and gold. You can incorporate pines into your table scapes whether in the form of boughs on linen napkins, as small pine tree favors guests can go home and plant, or as miniature potted pine tree centerpieces. Use ornaments in golden hues or garland in silvers. Any way you choose to go with a winter color scheme, you’ve got a wealth of choices at your fingertips. Pull from holiday décor that’s available during the season to get inexpensive ideas for wedding favors, table linens and more.

Your color scheme sets the tone for your day. But don’t feel you have to be matchy matchy with every aspect of your wedding. A few splashes of your color against a white or cream backdrop will look lovely. Don’t feel your bridesmaids have to wear 8 matching fuchsia gowns. If you like pink you can allow them to find dresses they like that are in various shades of pink to keep with your theme. They’ll have the freedom to choose what looks good on them and you’ll be pleased that your wedding party looks coordinated but not like they’re in uniform.

I agree the wedding attire can consist of a palette of just about any color. Tip: consider the season when choosing your colors, not only for the wedding attire but for the flowers as well.
