Forget White - Choose A Unique Wedding Dress Color

Image by waitscm on FlickrA white wedding dress is fine for some brides. In fact, 99% of all brides may choose to go down the aisle in a cloud of white. But not you. You’ve known since you were little that your wedding day was going to be a fairy tale and different from anyone else’s. So, wear a dress of a different color that will make you feel like the belle of the ball.

There are so many colors to choose from and then every color has several shades and hues and tones. So, you  will not be at a loss for dresses. And who says you have to shop only in bridal shops? Why not try fancy department stores and high-end consignment boutiques for dresses that are as unique as they are lovely. Many an evening gown has gone down the aisle instead of a typical bridal gown.

These days, Hollywood is going crazy for color. Celebrity brides are adding splashes of color to their attire and wedding accessories. You can go bold—like with a big red or purple velvet sash around your waist. Or you can go more subdued like a purple pastel rose and wear a tinted lilac shade with the barest kiss of color. Brides are adding color to their veils, too. From garnets in their tiaras to black pearls on the hems of their veils, there’s no end to the ways to add color.

If you have a favorite color, why not wear it? If you’re marrying in winter and love red why not wear a red velvet gown? If you’ve always had a passion for orange and are marrying in the spring, why not find a gown in a dreamy shade of creamsicle orange?

There are dresses both online and in stores that are designed in every size from 0 to 4X. And it’s a Crayola box of colors out there on the racks. You can wear a gold dress with sequins or a baby blue debutante gown. Check prom stores as they often carry hip dresses in the most sought-after colors. Don’t be afraid what anyone will think of you. It’s your day and you want to stand out as an original.

Another trend that’s happening now is the printed wedding dress accent. While you don’t want to show up in head to toe plaid, you may want to add piping in a plaid if you’re Scottish. Or, if you’re a huge fan of polka dots, you can add a splash at your waist or on your veil for fun.

Gone are the days where brides only wore white and no one dared vary from the norm. Now, you set the tone. If you’re having an outdoor summer wedding, who says you can’t wear a flowered gown and a big straw hat? If that’s what you want, do it.

Check consignment and resale shops as the dresses you find there are true bargains and many have never been worn. Ask to see Mother of the Bride dresses. Some of them are absolutely stunning and they come in fabulous colors. Visit department store evening gown sections and stores that sell prom gowns. You’ll be delighted by what you find. Have fun trying on styles and colors you think you’d never wear. You just might surprise yourself by what you fall in love with!

I guess I'm a traditionalist at heart so hot pink or red wouldn't be my first color choice. I like the idea of bringing in those colors in the bridal bouquet or even the dress sash. Champagne colored wedding dresses are beautiful too.
