We interviewed our Envelope Seals expert, Megan Clark of Clutch Events, to answer a few of the most common questions she gets:

Do you seal the inner envelope of a wedding invitation?

Traditionally no, you should leave an inner envelope unsealed. The tradition of using an inner envelope was once reserved to establish a high level of formality, such as a white-tie or black-tie affair. But as times are changing to a more "go green" era, inner envelopes aren’t a requirement for formal weddings and are now seen as more of a luxury than a requirement.

What is the best way to seal envelopes?

If you have allowed yourself some time to hand address a handful of envelopes a day before mailing them out, the easiest and most efficient way is the classic method of licking your envelopes. It is just that simple! I do recommend having a glass of water handy though!

However, if you are in a time crunch and/or want to get all of the invitations out in one fell swoop I would recommend getting a lightly damp wash cloth and gently wiping both sides of the sealant and pressing gently. You want to be careful not to use too much water so that it doesn’t bleed and saturate your envelope.

What can I use to seal envelopes?

Besides yourself or a damp wash cloth, you can also purchase an envelope sealer from an office supply store like Staples or Office Depot. They are quite inexpensive and come in an easy to use roller tube.

An elevated, alternative method to seal your invitations is getting a wax seal. If you are using a monogram or a symbol throughout your wedding, getting that image on a seal is a fun way to incorporate the theme to your invitations. You can order a seal through your stationer or Etsy. And since they have become increasingly popular in the past few years, the colors of wax come in a wide array of shades!

Another alternative is to get washi tape that matches the style of the wedding and close the outer envelope with tape. Washi tape can be purchased at Paper Source, craft stores and Etsy. Just make sure the tape sticks well to your envelope material - you don’t want the tape coming undone in the mail process!

Do wedding invitations need two envelopes?

Invitations don’t need two envelopes. An inner envelope is becoming more and more an outdated tradition. And long the lines of "going green" many couples are choosing to have an electronic RSVP instead of a paper reply card. If you prefer to have guests reply online, you wouldn’t need an RSVP envelope either. However, RSVP envelopes are still a modern tradition for most formality of weddings. If you do include an RSVP envelope, make sure to pre-stamp the envelope to make for an easy return!
